1. How does a Vickers hardness tester work?
The Vickers Hardness (HV) is calculated by measuring the diagonal lengths of an indent in the sample material left by introducing a diamond pyramid indenter with a given load. The diagonals of the indent are measured optically in order to determine the hardness, using a table or formula.
2. How do you check Vickers hardness?
This test consists of applying a force (also called a “load”) on the test material using a diamond indenter, to obtain an indentation. The depth of indentation on the material gives the value of hardness for the specimen. In general, the smaller the indentation, the harder the object is.
3. What is its hardness on the Vivkers scale?
Vickers hardness numbers are reported as xxxHVyy, e.g. 440HV30, or xxxHVyy/zz if duration of force differs from 10 s to 15 s, e.g. 440HV30/20, where: 440 is the hardness number, HV gives the hardness scale (Vickers), 30 indicates the load used in kgf.
